Concrete
Many concrete buildings and structures constructed over 20 years ago have deteriorated in the aggressive environment and the repairs to these structures require a specialised consultant and contractor - suitably qualified. African Concrete is the one of the major repair contractors in the Western Cape and highly regarded by Consultants and clients. Some of the contracts that we have successfully completed are concrete repairs at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, Cape Town Station, Steenbrass River mouth arch bridge, Good Hope Centre arch buttresses and Saldanha Steelworks plant on specialised grouting.
We were involved with the structural strengthening to Picbel Parkade and a major refurbishment of Cavendish Square Shopping centre. Major reservoir rehabilitation has also been successfully carried out at by African Concrete at Touwsrivier and Kasteelberg.
We are currently contracted on the rehabilitation of a number of bridges:
- Repairs to the bearings to the Foreshore Freeways for Cape Town City Council (R10m) which includes the jacking of the 1,6km long bridge at 2500 tons per pier and the removal, repair and replacement of the bearings.
- Repairs to the M5 viaduct over Voortrekker Road in Maitland, Cape Town including the replacement of 900 bridge bearings and extensive concrete repairs (R4m).
- Widening of the N2 road over rail bridge at Heideveld, Cape Town which includes innovative foundation strengthening and major new concrete work (R6m).
African Concrete runs a detailed Quality Assurance programme to ensure that a high standard of delivery is given on each contract.
We also contract on new concrete structures such as bridges, retaining walls etc. We have recently completed a large support wall under the spent fuel pool at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station (our operatives are radiation worker compliant).

Concrete
It has always been a goal of African Concrete to be one of the first companies to get involved in the building up of the townships and to encourage black business to develop. At our first office situated in the Philippi SBDC it became apparent that many black builders were looking for direction and support and many were referred to us.
We saw the opportunity of gaining support from the black building community that would stand us in good stead once the industry recession ended, and indeed we have made very good friends and contacts. We offered advice and help with tendering etc. and we soon identified the real entrepreneur and hard working builders, those who were not looking for handouts.
We have completed approximately R18m of work in Khayelitsha, Crossroads and surrounds, most notably the Mkhanyisela Primary School, Khayelitsha Fire Station, Philani Weavers factory and Clinic. We have also repaired 600 houses in Crossroads for the City Council working closely with the local RDP.
More recently African Concrete has been involved in more upmarket residential property with the successful development and construction of a twelve unit apartment block in Oranjezicht, Cape Town. |
